Welcome to British Rowing Championships. A
review of the Championships has taken place in order to revitalise the
event by improving race quality and increasing each crew's opportunity
to race. That review proposed a change in date and format which
was passed at the last British Rowing Council meeting on Saturday 26
November 2011.
The plan is to run two events; a British Rowing Championships and a British Rowing Junior Championships, on separate dates.
J14
and J16 juniors are to compete at Nottingham after school exams on the
existing date in July, with J18s and seniors racing during October in a
move to attract more elite rowers and raise the prestige of the
event. It is proposed that the 2012 Senior Regatta be staged at
Dorney and then return to the normal settings of Nottingham and
Strathclyde in the future.
Fiona Dennis, Chairman of the Review,
explained, “Splitting the events enables us to cater for both juniors
and seniors properly. So 2012 is an experimental year and if we
want to make a real change to rowing then we have to be bold,” she
added.
Council warmly welcomed the new format with several
members particularly pleased that the separate junior event would offer
younger rowers greater opportunities, as well as extending their racing
season.
British Rowing’s Performance Director for the GB Rowing
Team David Tanner also supported the decision, saying, “I’m really keen
that it works. I think if the format’s right, our Olympians may come
along. I’m 100% committed to working with Fiona to make this a truly
national championships.”
